Romantic Words – part 2

Italian

Italian / italiano is a Romance language spoken in Italy / Italia. As of 2021 it has around 70 million native speakers. It is an Italo-Romance language, more specifically. Historically speaking, there was no one Italian language, with every different region of the peninsula having its own dialect or language. The standard language of Italy today is actually derived from what was the Florentine dialect, chosen upon the set up of the current constitution for its rich culture and in particular its literary history – thanks to figures like Dante, Boccaccio and Petrarca.

As of 2021 it has 75 million + native speakers, and over 300 million native & non-native speakers in total. It is a Gallo-Romance language. The modern French language evolved out of the variety of Vulgar Latin (common Latin as opposed to Classical Latin) that was spoken in the ancient Roman province of Gaul/Gallia. Like the other Romance languages, the French language is renowned the world over for its beauty, nicknamed la Belle Langue and “the Language of Love”. Within France and the Gallo-Romance branch, it belongs to the dialect continuum known as the langues d’oïl, spoken to the North, as opposed to the highly distinct langues d’oc to the South. Both groups are named after the word for “yes” in their founding spearheading languages (Old French and Occitan, respectively).
